Polytechnic Improvisation Summer School July 2013

DAY 1 MONDAY 15TH JULY

9am we gather unsure of what to do , after  initial introductions we are taken to a room with white paper on all the walls and only pencils, rubbers and 1 Stanley knife .

The question Why do we do art?  we have 3 hours to respond to this..... go go go!!

The Group in the Space at SOAR ,Knuton Road, Parson Cross

My response is cutting:  to create,to talk, to interact, to explore the environment
Talking to people about where they live- Exploring the Environment
Tim leads us for a walk around Parson Cross
The question during the walk : What am I looking for?
What I found:
New routes around the area, excitement , new residents - the red months, interesting gardens.
Tongue Gutter: Introducing the Red Moth

DAY 4 THURSDAY 18TH JULY
Having  had two days at the Farm working I now re-enter the Summer School with some apprehension ...
Stuck ,lost ,aware of being out of  it I struggle to grasp what has been going on although the group are very helpful, sharing with me some of their ideas and thoughts.

A talk on what is improvisation by Amanda from MIRIAD ,Manchester starts the day.

What is improvisation?
not provided?

Why are we talking about it?

Is it key to creativity?

How does it come into our practice,When is it useful?

Helps us from getting too stuck when creating, keeps things moving and interesting

Work created in response to others work in the room - Inside looking out

Starting to work cutting circles ... inspired by entrance ,doorway by Janice and Clare (in background cutting)
Circles:creating a path ,leading people outside , interacting with the space and people

And the circles grow
And the space changes

Key moments from the day :

Working spontaneously cutting ,making, creating an experience for people

Finding new routes out of the studio

Working together in a space creates ideas for everyone -   collaboratively  and also discretely.

DAY 5 - FRIDAY 19TH JULY

Dreaming of nests! 10 am and a suggestion about talking to a group member and working with them starts the day off. My vision(from a dream last night ) of nests is realised together with Janice(group member) and leads to further work on the installation developing ...

Collaborating  with someone else makes me question my idea and how precious I am about it- at first want to do it my way and prefer on my own but letting go of this I see Janices response and like it.

The nest /boat/dish -a space for people to sit and look?

In the studio- photo by Anne Marie

Mine and Janice's collaboration - a roof for the nest?

Some of the materials

Whats next??

 A Talk by David Macalevey

WHY DO WE MAKE ART?

Key moments from the day

Challenging myself by working and making collaboratively with Janice

Developing the space outside of the studio

talking about why we make art...thinking why I make art

DAY 6: SATURDAY 20TH JULY

The last day and I am itching to make and tidy up , clear up the work....

and the nest became a dress?

The wall of circles became a floor of circles ..

the circles became balls and parcels...

THE END

Key moments from the day :
Pushing the process of making and transforming the work into something else
Steve's meditation
Group reflections
Tidying up - very satisfying!

More reflections to come
